So what has all this got to do with posing? Well, if we were to stand amodel, so that her stance was perfectly symmetrical such that we coulddraw a line of symmetry, it would look something like this:


She has a single line of symmetry running from top to toe and, one might reasonably argue that the pose (if there is a pose at all) is relatively bland and uninteresting. And for the most part, you would be right, but not universally so (more about this later).

Let's look at what happens when we ask the model to break away from standing symmetrically:
