I got asked to go on BBC Radio Manchester the other week to talk about retouching on a morning show… I said no and I don’t think the presenter liked that one bit.
My reasons – It’s not really for me and I don’t want to get into an argument live on radio about the morals of retouching when I basically do what I’m told by my clients. That is what I image she wanted anyway – to pick apart people who do undertake retouching.
What I do find most amusing though is that I know people think I drastically change what my clients look like, when actually, I don’t. My work has been discussed on numerous forums over the past 2 years, the topic generally being “how do I get my images to be like this photographers?” by other people wanting to know how I get the results I do.
Well it’s simple, I’ll tell you – It’s not down to retouching or altering someone’s looks (which apparently I do – according to some other photographers who show their incompetence by presuming this), it’s down to listening to your clients requirements, putting your client at ease while you do what you do best, lighting your subject properly, using the correct poses to flatter that particular clients body shape and finally, one of the most important things – having a pure passion for what you do and not losing sight of that!
So, my conclusion – removing a few spots, fading some lines and correcting badly fitting lingerie doesn’t make a beautiful photograph, what does is making someone so comfortable in front of your camera that you can actually capture their true personality, their beauty and bring out their confidence, creating truly beautiful and emotion provoking images.
Okay, rant over and for some more news… but slightly late!
