More than £400 of prizes were provided by sponsors: PermaJet, Aaduki Insurance, Arquadia, Tasco, .photo domains and The Societies.

Simon Wantling from Northamptonshire was awarded the coveted SINWP Bird Photographer of the Year 2018 1st Place by the panel of judges with the below image entitled ‘Little Owl Head on Flight’.

The judging team consisted of the staff at HQ who did the initial selections before handing over to a specialist team consisting of bird and ornithology experts Jon Ashton and Charles Farnell, chaired by Editor, Mike McNamee, himself an international nature salon chair for more than a decade. This trio viewed the images for the first time, independently (and anonymously) each gathering their favourites from the 88 highly commended.

On the winning image Mike McNamee explains, “The focal plane was absolutely nailed, so the eyes and forward facing claws are extremely sharp. The photographer also caught the turbulence of the deceleration perfectly in the feathers. Congratulations to the winner, it’s a fantastically captured image that’s taken the top spot in a very high-standard competition.”
