SWPP & BPPA member Greg Forbes doesn’t get soaked at wedding

While most of England got soaked over the weekend, Pethshire based photographer Greg Forbes took advantage of the driest May on record in Scotland to photograph an outdoor wedding in The Highlands of Scotland. ‘Given the normal summer weather up here it’s only occasionally that I get to photograph an outside wedding and I was determined to make the most of it’. Amazingly the dreaded midges, who were not invited to the big day failed to gatecrash the wedding. It presented great opportunity to for me to blend wedding photography with stunning landscapes.

The event was photographed within the grounds of Isles of Glencoe hotel on the banks of Loch Leven. Given the fine weather the younger guests where having a ball. The picture on the blog shows the two flower girls trying to do there best to ‘trash the flowers’.  I still have a few free weekend’s available for 2008 and photograph throughout Scotland.

Thirty years as a snapper

An SWPP photographer is celebrating thirty years as a snapper this year with not one, but four photographic events!

Martin O’Neill is marking his anniversary with a book, two Manchester exhibitions…and a show in Japan!

The projects are a trip back in time for O’Neill, now an established wedding and portrait photographer with a studio in Culcheth, near Warrington.

Don’t Miss This is the title of his new book. It’s a collection of 83 black and white photographs taken in the 1980s, when O’Neill freelanced for numerous newspapers and magazines. The shots are a humorous escape from the constraints of his press work, and come with a text by esteemed photography writer and editor Laura Noble.
The book is on sale at London’s Photographers’ Gallery.

Eccles 1977 is a collection of 100 photographs taken by a teenage O’Neill growing up in the Salford town during Jubilee year.A small selection of the work was shown last year as part of the 100th anniversary celebrations of Eccles library, and the full set of prints will be shown there during the summer.

I Remember Nothing is O’Neill’s collection of 26 images of Joy Division.
He’s to have two simultaneous showings of the images, in Manchester…and Tokyo! In 1979 he photographed a gig by the band at Bowdon Vale Youth Club, near Altrincham. The group became world famous, though a year later lead singer Ian Curtis killed himself. He and the group are the subjects of two current films, and O’Neill’s shots are going on display in Tokyo to coincide with the launch of one of those films, Control. His shots will be on show for two weeks at the fabulously named Tokyo Hipsters Club, with a one-off multi-media show being staged at the city’s flagship Apple Computer store.

At the same time, the full set of photographs is going up at House of Linn, a prestigious Hi-Fi retail consultancy in Manchester.

O’Neill worked for local newspapers until 1982, and went on to work as a freelance for a great number of national newspapers, magazines and companies. He says he’s loved every minute of his thirty years as a photographer, working as far afield as Libya and Sri Lanka, and photographing a rich variety of people, from Mohammed Ali and George Best to Take That and the Queen.

Photography, Personally, Professionally!

SWPP and BPPA member Snaps Britain Got Talent! Star

Lee Howard Photography photographed Rhyl based singer James Stone while filming for Britain’s Got Talent at the golden sands camp site in Towyn, north Wales.

The camera crew caused quite a bit of excitement, and james said to me that he was becoming a little over whelmed, however after filming james treated the crowd to a few tracks.

James who was nicknamed Snake Hips on the show will appear in the semi finals tonight (tues) live on ITV, and appeared on GMTV this week.

James 52 from Rhyl, has been a club/pub singer for the best part of 30 years, and sees this as his last chance at the big time.

Recky: Mistley, Essex

I like to check out places before I photograph a wedding and recently visited Mistley church for Vicky who is getting married to John at this church in July.

She said that she would like a photograph of the church at night, when it’s impressively lit. So I arrived a little before sundown and took these. Mistley is renown for it’s large number of White Mute Swans that live at the waterfront, so I was surprised to find a pair of Black Swans. I only had a wide angle lens with me so the picture of the swans isn’t great, as I couldn’t get too close!

Maldives

I’ve just returned from a 2 week photography diving holiday in the Maldives – renowned as one of the foremost diving locations. It certainly didn’t disappoint as I was fortunate enough to encounter both Mnata Ray and Whale Shark!

It’s a sad fact that much of the coral in the area has been badly bleached by the 1998 El Nino and further damaged by the Tsunami of 2004. But recovery is still in progress and there is plenty to see.

The visibility underwater wasn’t brilliant at this time of year but with a little effort and a very wide angle lens it’s amazing what you can capture.

Check out the escape section of my website for the latest images from this trip.
