Alan Hutchison has been a photographer all of his life, but it was only in 2009 that he decided to pursue his passion in a professional capacity.
Up until then Alan's focus had been on the Computing Industry starting as a programmer and then worked his way up the career ladder to IT Director. Half of Alan's 30 years in IT were spent in Board level positions and it was there that Alan developed an understanding of the finer aspects of business success and that even with the best IT Systems in the world, if you didn't have a good marketing team your business would struggle.
In 2000 Alan founded an Internet-based Financial Services company and successfully raised over £1/2m worth of funding and floated the business on the London OFEX stock market in 2001, three days before 9/11 - sadly that proved not the best time to float a financial services company on the stock market, but in the process Alan did create a company that was valued at £1m from just an initial investment of £6000 and developed a website that was achieving 1 million page views a month, just 30 days after it's launch.
In February 2009 Alan decided that Corporate IT life was no longer the joy it used to be so he decided to finally do what he had always wanted to do, become a Professional Photographer.
Recognising that it doesn't matter how good your photography is, if you don't properly market your business properly, no one will know about it, Alan started his business from day one with a focus on marketing. Starting with a "reasonable" 5 weddings booked in 2009, 2010 had 44 weddings, and 2011 already has 47 booked, plus a head start on 2012 and 13 - proof that marketing works.
Alan holds a Licentiate with the SWPP and is currently actively working towards gaining his Associateship. At last year's Convention Alan was awarded the SWPP Members Choice Wedding Photographer of the Year 2010.
He was also a one-time member of Mensa with an IQ of 156, which he joined because someone (with a much lower IQ obviously) told him that in the event of the Nuclear attack, it was the clever people that got the places in the bunkers first. He is definitely not as clever as he used to be however, which he blames on his passion for fine wine.
