Michael Shilling LSWPP Biography
Michael’s ten years in the photography industry has certainly a varied one. After graduating from Manchester Metropolitan University with a photography degree in 2001 Michael embarked on a 5 year career as a cruise ship photographer.
Cruise ship photography for me was my baptism of fire, I shot over 100,000 people’s formal portraits, photographed weddings on glaciers in Alaska, on the beaches of Hawaii and the Caribbean and worked with teams that were up to 18 photographers strong.
It wasn’t just about boring event photography either, I’ve photographed from helicopters over active lava flows, from fast rescue boats in Alaska’s Glacier Bay and and even while standing on the lock gates of the Panama Canal.
After leaving the life at sea Michael walked almost immediately into a job as a family portrait photographer at two studios in South West London. Within three months he took over as the studio manager of both studios and raised turnover by 1000% by the end of his first year in charge...... and in the middle of the recession.
At the start of 2009 Michael left the studios to start his own business Memory Gate Photographic, with retoucher and photographer Marcin Mieczkowski. It was at the same time that the pair both joined the SWPP.
By the end of 2009 Michael and Marcin had launched two other companies: Redrosette Equestrian Photography and London Pro Retouch.
On December 21st 2009 Michael began one of his most ambitious projects to date........
PhotoCreative365.com
I started off wanted to do a 365 photography blog but it has evolved into something much much more. In less than a year and a half we’ve had over 3 million views of our 600 articles and 100 podcast episodes.
In 2011 Michael still keeps PhotoCreative365 updated daily and records a weekly podcast.
Memory Gate continues to build it’s portrait photography reputation and client base in South London and as they move into their third year in business turnover is at an all time high.
