Type business: Full Time Professional Photographer
My photographic style: I have no interest in copying other people's images. Neither am I impressed with mass produced photographs that are so readily available. I am now a Digital DSLR camera convert having changed courses from film in 2004. Having come from a Journalistic background this is still mirrored in my images, where I endeavour to capture the moment without any or only minimal darkroom changes. I started in black and white film and now shoot nearly completely in colour. I love outdoor work and particularly Mother Nature and all her faces. This means that a great deal of my work is opportunistic, which is a challenge I enjoy the most.
My greatest strengths: I come from a highly technical area which required complete integrity in all my dealings and opinions especially my images. I have a lengthy, active love for what I now do. My focus being on wildlife and landscape photography.
I have been in photography: I entered my apprenticeship over 40 years ago and I still have not finished learning what there is to know.
How I got started in photography: I was trained as a Forensic Investigator, which required the mastering of photography in all its forms very early in my career. The integrity of every shot being scrutinised at the most highest levels.
My photographic skills: I have skills and training in 5 x 4, 2 1/4 square 35 mm film and now digital. I have experience in most areas of the photographic art, having worked in nearly all fields at some stage. Having now settled in my current passion of nature photography.
My personality: I have a journalistic view of the world where integrity and the search for perfection is ever present. My life has been forever surrounded with these facets and it has only in more recent years that I have experienced the real need for more through an artistic approach still with my core values.
Geographic areas I cover: Australia and New Zealand
Venues I frequently attend: I am constantly watching for subjects and how to best capture them at their best light with integrity. I have a passion for the seeking the beauty in the areas I visit. Having a working knowledge of animal behaviour helps to anticipate the animal's next move, and those things that are either unique or unusual for that species.
I found inspiration from: I have a liking for Ken Duncan's landscape work it does impress. I am personally inspired by the challenges that are placed before me to capture the natural world for all future and existing generations. A driving force to seek out beauty and ugliness as I find it and capture that wondrous moment.
Success in photography: Over the years I had hundreds of my photographs scrutinised for their factual content and technique by the highest judges of the land and my peers. Although I have never entered any competitions my work has and is being exhibited in mainly Asia. Where I have had a moderate success in the corporate world. My original training lasted 5 years when I was then permitted to produce photographs for judging in Court rooms through Australia. This involved photomicroscope, studio work, macro photography and journalistic photography. Along with this was the ever present need to develop and print all the images taken and the technique of darkroom.
Photographic training: 5 years of formal training and 40 years of life's experiences.
My interests outside photography: I love for classical and new-age music. I particularly like aboriginal music from different countries. I enjoy reading and keeping up to date with the new techniques developing in world of photography. There is always a constant need to keep abreast of the computer age and how it can be best adapted to my uses. I have a love of travel and also research papers on native animals.
Major events: I feel the feedback from my first major sales in Asia the honesty and the understanding of my approach to my subject matter will always stay with me.
Why I like the SWPP: The constant flow of information from all areas of photography. It is a resource that money cannot buy. It also opens doors to people who expect a high standard of work.
Future plans: To keep learning and capturing as many images that I feel will be looked back upon in the future as how things were.
