LanarkshireTony GilmourTMG Photo Services 106 Stobo East Kilbride Lanarkshire G74 3HJ Scotland tel:- 01355 247 203 mobile:- 07958 336 355 web address:- www.tmg-photoservices.co.uk/ e-mail:- Tony Gilmour Specialist Photographer for :- Wedding photography Portrait photography Type business: Full Time Professional Photographer My photographic style: I prefer to describe myself as a frustrated student who has through necessity focussed on schools nurseries and events. But would like to explore the more creative aspects of photography if given the chance. My greatest strengths: I believe that I can work the best from a set of nursery kids within the time constraints of nursery photography whilst allowing and encouraging the children to relax and thereby get the best and most natural expressions from them. In other words I HATE CHEEEEESE! but the kids don't know that. I have been in photography: As a keen enthusiast since around 1995 and as a freelancer since 2003. How I got started in photography: I applied for an advertised photography job and was offered the job on the strength of my hobby portfolio. So I volunteered for redundancy from my Service Technician job of 14 years. My photographic skills: When I get the time I like to practice macro and like to take shots with strong graphic shapes and symmetry. My personality: Quietly confident Geographic areas I cover: I currently do work for a couple of companies which takes me to Manchester, Barrow in Furness, Newcastle and can cover up to Inverness, Fort William and Aberdeen. Anywhere in the UK if the price is right. Venues I frequently attend: For weddings I prefer the older more ornate churches or buildings with mature gardens and grounds but have to admit that some of the modern ones are simply flooded with great natural light or good geometric shapes. I found inspiration from: People who achieve excellence in their chosen field be it Astro Physics, Photography or the little old lady across the street whose garden is always beautiful and immaculate and puts mine to shame when we have 3 adults living in the house. In photography it is probably the wildlife photographers who have patiently stalked or staked out their prey for weeks or months in all types of weather in order to get THE SHOT. Or the ones who have the technical/creative ability to consistently turn out great photographs combined with the people/marketing skills to bring them back trailing their friends with them. Success in photography: I don't do competitions but have been considering it for a while now. Once did a single (10 Saturday mornings) Scotvec module on Basic Camera techniques at the Glasgow College of Building and Printing. Photographic training: No formal education. Although my original business plan included enrolling on a full time HND course in Photography and Digital Imaging at Reid Kerr College in Paisley. The course was a 3yr one but again my portfolio got me in at second year level. Unfortunately the company who enticed me into taking my redundancy turned out to be less than honest and disappeared owing myself and two other photographers a large amount in back pay. I tried to continue with the course but had to quit after 4 or 5 weeks and search for bill paying income. My interests outside photography: I used to have work, family, and hobbies (photography and rugby then five a side footie). But my sporty days are practically over now and my other hobby is now my work. So I have to say that for now other interests will have to wait until I can establish a steady income through my business. At which stage I shall probably have income photography and a separate hobby photography. I have a large family of siblings and in laws plus I have recently become a grandfather so they will keep me busy enough in the meantime. Major events: Apart from becoming a grandfather for the first time a little over a year ago there is nothing that I think is particularly remarkable. Testimonials: These are not customer testimonials but written responses to my survey which is printed on the back of my nursery order form. From Gillian Grey (Little Einsteins Nithsdale) Shot 23/05/10 " Good range of photos + poses and action shots that has captured my daughters personality" From Katherine Sharp (Little Einsteins Clubhouse) Shot 08/09/10"Photographs were excellent. How many sweeties were promised" From Kim Reid ( Little Einsteins Clubhouse) shot 8/09/10 "Poses are fabulous really brilliant...........thought they were the best kids photos they have ever seen" From Ellanor King (Little Einsteins Creche) shot 9/10/10 "Photographer was excellent at getting my son (who normally hates getting his picture taken) to sit still or pose" From Fiona West (Little Einsteins Creche) shot 09/09/10 "Love the pictures...........Particularly like that proofs are 6 x 4. Very easy to see and choose from" Why I like the SWPP: I cant really comment yet as I have only just joined. But I do like the idea of having a mentor and joining in discussions on your forum. Tagline: Squeezemaknees Future plans: I am 54 years old and hope to establish TMG Photoservices well enough to have employed photographers that can keep the business going full time as I wind down my hours and hope to do more travel photography as I get into my sixties And finally: I new when I turned pro that I had a lot to learn. I did not appreciate exactly how much. But I have persevered and although it has been a struggle I am getting better in all aspects of my business. The main difference between now and then is that the more I learn the more I also learn about how much I still need to learn. So I would be keen to know if the Societies can help in this area by putting me in touch with any established photographers who might need the occasional assistant/second shooter for a day or even as a permanent apprentice/employee.
