The theme for this years competition was 'Extreme', with students being briefed to capture the meaning of that word in a single image.
The winning image depicted a heavily-shelled building that had been damaged by the Bosnian War. The image shows how the building has been left alone whilst civilisation continues to grow around it.
All images were taken on Fujifilm Professional film and submitted via www.fujifilmstudentawards.co.uk and from these initial entries 9 Merit Winners were invited to submit a print for final judging. Each Merit Winner collects 10 rolls of Fujifilm film.
Marketing Director Lisa Creagh of Metroprint said of the image Dexter Lander's image of buildings destroyed by the Bosnian war and then built under with new developments is a fantastic example of photography's ability to create extreme visual contradictions. At first the image looks like a composite, but on further reflection you realise that this is 'real' and the two halves are in fact two separate historical eras, sitting together in extraordinary discord. It's an elegant visual allegory that deserved to win.
Norwich University College of the Arts was the source of the most entries in the Awards with 242 submissions. The Department will be presented with a certificate and £200 worth of Fujifilm Professional film.
Gabriel Da Costa from Fujifilm Professional commented on the Awards This years theme attracted a wide range of interesting interpretations and the level of talent was very high judging by the images we received from the students.
He continued The advice and experience Dexter will receive from the experts at Metroprint is sure to be invaluable and we will no doubt be hearing a lot more from him as he furthers in his photography career.
The Fujifilm Student Awards 2013 will launch on September 1st with further details to be announced shortly.
