Building Foundations Dreaming BIG

With the chilly autumn weather upon us, many families are too busy with their kids returning to school, catching up on prewinter yardwork, and in Canada, Thanksgiving road trips to visit relatives for the holiday weekend. For a lot of folks, it’s simply too early to think about family photos for Christmas.

Groom leading the bride

As a photographer, what do you do with yourself in this little lull between weddings and holiday photos?

For me, it’s the season to prepare for bridal shows, create new sample albums, think about marketing, read some of the business books on my ‘next-in-line’ shelf, and of course, take the occasional photo, either for clients or as a personal project so I can get out and enjoy the weather.

Some of my personal projects are actually planned out to help with my photography business as well. Once I had secured a booth in the big fall bridal show, I knew I wanted to start promoting Revive the Dress photo sessions because they are relatively unheard of by the general public over here. It would be something I could offer to differentiate myself from my competitors, and with many of the now-married brides I talk to,they are not completely happy with the wedding photos they received from their photographers. So I enlisted the help of my friend at the bridal boutique to scope out potential clients who might be looking to consign their wedding dress (yet still fit into it), and would be interested in taking part in a post-wedding photo session.
