Talking about his success, Nathan said, “I have enjoyed photography since I can
remember and you won’t see me travel anywhere without my camera. I originally
started taking pictures so I could remember my travels and journeys, but then I
started taking more pictures of landscapes and cities and it became an important
hobby of mine. I now study photography at college, which was how I was able to
enter this competition and to win out of all the amazing pictures people entered
is so incredible. I only entered the competition at the last minute so it was a
real shock when I found out I had won it. The thing I’m most excited about is
having my picture displayed at the NEC in Birmingham. Having my work exhibited
is something I’ve always thought would be really cool, but never thought it
would happen anytime soon.
"The picture was taken whilst on a college trip to America in April; we ended
the trip with a stopover in New York..... I only had a few hours of evening time
to wander before we had to reconvene.....The majority of my pictures were taken
around the Time Square area, most with my wide angle lens but some portraits
taken with my 70-300 zoom lens. In the centre of Time Square I recognised an
area from a picture I had seen on Flickr by Philipp Klinger..... I experimented
with different shutter speeds to get the correct exposure of the different
elements. For example the lit billboards needed a faster shutter speed for a
good exposure as they have more light around them, yet on the street level where
there is less light a slower shutter speed was required.
I took a variety of pictures in a 180 degree span, from these I chose
the three best of each angle and manipulated the images to have the best
exposure of each area, and then merged the three images together to form
a panoramic. The most challenging thing was fitting the buildings in
with the perspective of the picture, this took lots of trial and
error...... Eventually after many hours on Photoshop I had the final
image completed." (Full text About the Image can be seen in the

Steven Brierley, UK Director of Sales and Marketing judged the
competition for HARMAN, with Neil Hibbs, Manager of Technical Services,
and Sue Evans from Technical Services. Steven Brierley commented, “We
were pleasantly surprised to receive hundreds of entries for our
competition, and there was a very consistent high standard. It was
interesting to see how individual students interpreted the theme. The
winning image by Nathan stood out because it really captured the theme
of the competition, and his dramatic image was unanimously voted the
winner by all the judges.”
The winning images will be displayed on the HARMAN technology stand C2
at the Focus on Imaging exhibition at the NEC Birmingham from 6th to 9th
March 2011.
The images can also be seen in the Competitions section on

HARMAN inkjet products are available to buy from UK Dealers, and from
