Synopsis:
Victoria Hillman is a scientist by training with a BSc in zoology with marine zoology from the University of Wales, Bangor and an MSc in Wildlife Biology and Conservation from Edinburgh Napier University. Photography for a long time was just a hobby, but now Victoria is an award winning photographer and Manfrotto Ambassador. She also contributes to articles and images to National Geographic Explorer, the BBC and various magazines and books.

All her experience means you will be in safe hands on the Fotospeed Academy Wildlife Photography day, as Victoria guides you through taking the perfect photograph of a variety of insects and wildlife. This course will focus mainly on Dragonflies and Damselflies as late May provides the best opportunities to see them.

What will I learn?
During the morning, we will look at the techniques needed to photograph a variety of insect and nature subjects in their natural habitat, with a focus on dragonflies and damselflies. To start we’ll look at how to find them and why shooting so early in the morning can be crucial to capturing that image but also be a magical time of day.

We will look at the importance of using natural light as your main light source and when and how to add additional light if needed. We will cover aperture, metering, exposure and composition and how we can use these to create different eye catching and artistic images of insects and nature in the field. We’ll look at both close-up details and taking a step back to photograph the subject in its habitat and photographing in both colour and black and white. We’ll use in camera settings to create the images, changing contrast and white balance.

The emphasis will be capturing that image in the field but how minor editing work can really bring the most out of your images. We will go through how to edit your images to make the most of them but still keeping it looking natural and why you shouldn’t over process your images. Finally, you will then have the opportunity to have an image taken form the day printed onsite. The A4 giclee print can be taken home with you and kept as memorabilia from the day. What will I need to bring?

Camera and lenses, ideally a macro lens if you have one or one with a macro capability, memory card, batteries, flash gun if you have one and/or LED lights, and tripod.

Appropriate outdoor footwear and clothing as it can be very dewy and wet and chilly at that time in the morning, if you have them I would advise waterproof trousers and shoes. Please bring your own laptop with Photoshop or Lightroom to process the image after the morning of photography, along with charger.

Refreshments will be provided, but you will need to bring your own packed lunch.
