Venue special features: Historic hotel, only remaining 19th century hotel in Brussels. The façade and parts of the itnerior are protected due to historical value. The hotel serves as a real Belle Epoque museum, with a variety of different styles ranging from Renaissance and Italian Baroque, to Louise XVI and Empire.
Venue History: The hotel Metropole opened in 1895 by the Weileman's brothers. It has been, since the beginning, a glowing example of modrn comfort and luxury. It was the first hotel to provide both electricity and the telephone in 1895, and the first hotel on the net in 1995. The hotel has played host to many important events since its opening. In 1911, the first Solvay Physics Board was held which brought together well renowned scientists such as Einstein, Marie Curie and Poincaré. Heads of States, politicians, actors have all resided at the Hôtel Métropole.
In 1985, "Le Bar 19ème" and the restaurant "L'Alban Chambon" were opened, which in 1989, thanks to his chef Dominique Michou was awarded 2 red chef's hats and 16/20 in the GaultMillau culinary guide. He is a member of the French culinary academy, Eurotoques. In 1991, he was introduced into the very select "Association des Maîtres Cuisiniers de Belgique" and in 1992, into "Association des Maîtres Cuisiniers de France" - Associations of Master cooks of Belgium and France. The restaurant was completely renovated during the summer of 2002 giving it a Baroque Italian décor.
In March 2002, the Council of Monuments and Sites of Brussels Capital Region decided to protect some of the exterior of the Hotel due to its architectural value. Because of their historical, artistic and aesthetic interest, the ground floor, staircase, banisters, mahogany lift cage, breakfast room, reception desk and bar have also been protected. This order also deals with the exterior protection of the street façade and roof of the two neighbouring buildings of the Metropole Hotel.
Other information: The Hotel Metropole is a member of the "Great Hotels of the World" collection which divides a select few luxury hotels in to four groups. The Métropole is in the romantic collection (and the meetings collection), making it a perfect choice for weddings and honeymoons.
Honeymoon vacations local attractions: Situated in the heart of Brussels, the hotel is close to a variety of local attractions. The Granc Place, Theatre de la Monnaie and the Bourse are all just a few steps from the Metropole. Brussels is also home to many beautiful parks and gardens. The Hotel Metropole is situated close to a bus and metro station, so is it easy to travel throughout the city.
Wedding Trivia: HONEYMOON After "kidnapping" his bride, the groom would take her and go into hiding. By the time the bride's family tracked them down them, the bride would probably already be pregnant! A "bride price" would then be negotiated. An earlier source is the early Jewish custom of the bride and groom spending a week together alone immediately after the marriage feast. The earliest reference to this practice is Jacob's marriages to Leah and Rachel.
