One Light Portraits by Dave Montizambert

Earlier this year my mentor and friend Dean Collins of Finelight and Software Cinema died of cancer. Dean was responsible for a huge chunk of my knowledge and success in photography as he was for many others. As a tribute to Dean I would like to show you a fascinating lighting technique that he taught me in the first days of studying with him, back in the early 1980s. He gave me an exercise that seemed impossible – create a dramatic portrait of a person against a pure white background. A daunting task to a beginner, however it got worse, I had to do it with just one light!

Landscape Photographer -Labour of Love by Paul Gallagher

Following his introduction in the last issue, Paul Gallagher now gives us a candid rundown on the trials and tribulations of converting into large format camera work and the attendant processing. It acts as a wonderful foil to the frantic pace of the RAW workflow discussion in the earlier part of the magazine – it makes one quite nostalgic really!
Sales Is What It Is All About by Suzanne Stinton-Heeley

It seems that, almost without exception, there are three little words that can make most photographers quiver. Most photographers will happily talk about lenses, pixels, RAW v JPEG, CS4, etc, etc, but mention those three little words ‘sales and marketing’ and they go very quiet. It’s hardly surprising – very few photographers came into the industry to sit and write marketing plans or plan ad campaigns – but the best camera and lens in the world is useless to a professional photographer unless they can sell what they take with it.

Dave Montizambert, Paul Gallagher and Suzanne Stinton-Heeley are all speaking at the 2010 Convention
