Venue History: Originally a monasitc settlement the Island then became home to a Danish settlement. Following the Norman invasion of Ireland in 1160, tracts of land in Munster & Leinster were given as a reward to Maurice Fitzgerald, cousin of Strongbow and this included the Island. In 1958 the Igo family purchased the Island and they installed the ferry and a five acre glasshouse complex. The Castle was opened as a hotel in 1987 and the current owners purchased the Castle in 1997.
