Venue History: In the 1850's, 3 Watson brothers left their home in Scotland and found themselves in Portsea, Australia. In the 1870's, Alexander Watson built a cottage, later adding a bar. In 1876 he obtained a license and so began The Portsea Hotel.
In 1927 most of the old Portsea Hotel was demolished and a modern' Hotel was erected on the site. The owner at the time, Mr R.H Marshall made improvements to the Hotel including a hot and cold water service and a tennis court.
The Vaughan Family purchased the Hotel in 1969 renovating and operating the business. The following 20 years saw many different groups holding the lease including the Kennons and the A.V.S Catering Group.
The Vaughans took back operational control in 1990.
In 1994 the Hotel underwent extensive internal renovations, whilst maintaining the historic exterior. The Portsea Hotel then exposed even more of the spectacular views that exist across the famous beer garden.
In 1999, the current owners, Fraser Island Pty Ltd purchased the Hotel & immediately began dramatic renovations to once again improve upon the existing success.
The construction of the Portsea Deck restaurant, and the new enclosed terrace area was completed in December 1999, & has experienced enormous success ever since, boasting spectacular views across the Bay.
Today, you can indulge in a sumptuous meal with a view incomparable with any other. Your meal and beverages, chosen from our contemporary bistro menu and beverage list can be enjoyed in our AHA award winning, beautifully enhanced surrounds of solid Jarrah, serene seaside shades & Sydney Blue Gum flooring.
Alternatively relax on the Portsea Deck in Summer & experience fine dining & service whilst overlooking the beautiful Port Phillip Bay.
Take in the ambience of cosy country warmth by one of our four open fire places in Winter or soak up the sun & the exciting atmosphere in our nationally acclaimed beer garden.
