What about the Light? - seeing is Believing

The subject has no end and there appears to be an ever-lasting need for information on lighting techniques. Despite all those programmes and writings, not only mine, but others such as Montizambert and none less than the late Monte Zucker, there is a general consensus among leading industry practitioners that the weakest element in professional photography is lighting technique and many blame this weakness on the advent of the digital camera.

The world at your feet

It is very easy to be enchanted by the larger landscape and when I am out by myself I am often taken in and soaked up by the wider view. All too often I concentrate my visualisation process on the open valley, the river cascading downwards or the distant horizon and fail to take much notice of the smaller world. This, however, is beginning to change. On a recent trip to Sutherland in Scotland, I was revisiting some of my favourite locations and, once again, enjoying what they had to offer. But after a day or so I became somewhat challenged with finding something that I deemed to be different and I felt I was not breaking new ground.

John Swannell

At the 2010 Convention Dinner, John Swannell was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of The Societies in recognition of his contribution to the art of photography. Here we reproduce a feature on John, written by Trevor Lansdown with kind permission of Calumet. All images courtesy and copyright John Swannell.

John Swannell may be of slender stature but he’s made a big fat impact on UK and international photography across a helter-skelter working life that has spanned 40 years – and shows no sign of slipping softly into the photo sidelines any time soon. Swannell (63) has pretty much done it all. But naturally he’s far too polite to boast about any of it.

Fast Agile Beautiful

McNamee's verdict on the new Nikon D3s

The D3S is a recently launched model in the flagship range of Nikon SLRs. It aims to provide a new, fast option for press, sports and nature photographers and builds on the established reputation of the D3. With a more modest pixel count than many cameras of its ilk, the D3S has an ability to keep photographing in light that was totally impossible until now. The ISO speed range extends seven stops from 200 – 12,800 with additional modes at either end to extend the high end to an effective 102,400, with a low end of three settings below 200 ISO. The pixel count of the full-size chip is 12.1 mp (4,256x2,832) which delivers a 46.5MB cmyk into Photoshop from a RAW file (uncompressed) of about 13.5MB.

Monkey Business 4

The Society Book Shop

When it comes to books on the social sector there are few collections with the depth and range of those published by Amherst Media. They have a simple formula. Every book is 128 pages, soft backed and in American Quarto size of 8.5x11inches. With this page limitation comes a certain conciseness of subject, typified perhaps by Norman Phillips' High Key, Low Key, and now, Middle Key lighting guides, one for each topic. The problem for the would-be purchaser is deciding which ones to go for (and it has to be more than one!). The easiest way is to browse the book stand at one of the many events that The Societies attend or organise. Failing that you will find about 150 words on each of the books on the website www.thesocieties.net/store. The covers shown in the combination photograph above are the recent releases.

Quick Tips - Continue to Innovate

Howard Butterfield of theimagefile...
offers some good advice

Keep excitement in your work. Try new things and invest in yourself and your craft, with time and ideas rather than money. This will give you a new story to give to your existing customers and perhaps something the competition does not have. Stay aware of the competition but avoid getting into any form of price war. Sell a better service; keep closer to your customers - sell and market harder and more inventively.
