Venue special features: Upper Battery is the highest point on Holy Island and has unparalleled views of the Northumberland and Berwickshire coastline.
Venue History: Lindisfarne Castle was built in around 1570 by the English government to defend the Holy Island harbour from Scottish attack. After a period of neglect the Castle was acquired in 1902 by Edward Hudson, the editor of Country Life magazine. He commissioned the prominent architect Sir Edwin Lutyens to renovate the property, making it a viable holiday home. Hudson sold the property in 1920 and by 1944, Sir Edward de Stein owned the building. He gave it to the National Trust who took over full ownership in 1970.
Other information: The Castle is located on Holy Island which is a tidal island accessible via a causeway road. The sea floods this road twice a day, cutting the island off from the mainland. This dramatically affects wedding availability at the Castle, as does public opening. It is essential to speak to someone at the Castle if you wish to discuss dates. A Wedding Information pack can also be sent to you by email or post.
Wedding Trivia: The largest wedding attendance was a Jewish wedding in Jerusalem in 1993 where 30,000 people attended.
