Michael Jess is a photographer working across portraiture, fine art, social documentary and conceptual photography. His work explores identity, culture and contemporary society through powerful and visually engaging imagery.
He is currently exhibiting Divine as part of the Artists Open House Dulwich Festival. This groundbreaking portrait project portrays Black yoga masters through visually dramatic imagery inspired by African aesthetics and cultural influences.
Michael is the founder of Re/Frame: Photographers on the Frontline of Identity, established in 2022. The collective brings together critical photographic practitioners who shine a spotlight on contemporary culture and explore the complex ways identity is represented and understood.
He was also a founding member of Autograph, the long-established Association of Black Photographers, contributing to a wider movement that has helped establish and promote the work of Black photographers and artists.
Michael's experience extends beyond photography. He has a broad media background, having worked as a reporter for The Voice, Britain's largest-selling Black newspaper, as well as working as a researcher on numerous documentary productions for the BBC and Channel 4.
This experience has helped shape his approach to photography, combining visual storytelling with a strong interest in people, culture, identity and the stories that exist behind the image.
Michael studied at the London College of Printing and PCL under Victor Burgin, whose teaching emphasised the intimate relationship between words and pictures. His photographic style has also been influenced by renowned photographers including George Rodger, Gordon Parks, Vanessa Winship and Malick Sidibé.
Alongside his own photographic practice, Michael teaches a number of University of the Arts London (UAL) accredited photography courses, sharing his knowledge and experience with the next generation of photographers.
His photographic and creative journey has taken him across the world, with experience and travel spanning Belgium, Scotland, Germany, the United States of America, France, Holland, Jamaica and Ghana.
Through his portraiture, fine art and documentary work, Michael continues to explore the relationship between photography, identity and contemporary culture, creating images that encourage the viewer to look more closely and consider the stories behind the photograph.
