Cadmium sulfide cell (CdS)

SWPP Photographic Glossary

A cadmium sulfide (CdS) cell is a light-sensitive electronic component used in exposure meters and automatic camera systems. When supplied with an electric current, its electrical resistance changes according to the amount of light it receives, allowing the meter or camera to measure and adjust exposure accurately. CdS cells are widely used in both vintage and some modern photographic equipment, providing reliable light detection for proper exposure in varying lighting conditions.
