Photogravure

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Photogravure is a printing process that produces high-quality photographic images from an etched copper plate. In this technique, a photographic image is transferred onto a copper plate, which is then etched to create tiny cells that hold ink. The plate is pressed onto paper, reproducing the image with exceptional tonal range and detail.

Photogravure has been valued for its ability to produce rich, continuous tones and archival-quality prints. Historically used in fine art, book illustrations, and high-end publications, this method remains appreciated by photographers and printmakers seeking exquisite image reproduction with a classic, textured quality.
