Type business: Full Time Professional Photographer
My photographic style: I'm very much a photojournalist, I've worked for some years covering events for local newspapers and my style of photography has a firm grounding in 'The Decisive Moment'. I work quickly and efficiently, finding the light and angle to make my work unique.
Over the past few years I've included the use of portable off camera flash in my work, which has seen my photographic style change somewhat into a pseudo fashion look.
I work is continually evolving, and I find it difficult to believe that I'll ever stagnate. Using new technology, excellent equipment and allowing my mind to stay receptive to new ideas and trends, will hopefully see my work, evolve even further with the results captivating my clients and the world of photography.
It's a long and enjoyable path to the summit of the mountain.
My greatest strengths: Adaptability, a keen mind, and a creative streak a mile wide. Coupled with fantastic customer service and a dedication to my clients that is second to none.
I have been in photography: I've been a professional photographer for a fairly short time, only eighteen months (as of October 2012), but photography is in my blood.
My father was a pro for many years, and I inherited his love of the art.
I picked up my first camera a Russian built Zenith E (35mm SLR), at the age of 12, and have been taking photographs ever since.
How I got started in photography: As I mentioned my father was a professional photographer for many years, and I assisted at my first wedding at the age of 15.
I was a very keen amateur for most of my adult life, but mostly shot street documentary and landscapes on film before making the full switch to digital in 2009.
My photographic skills: Honest as the day is long, gregarious, sincere and loving.
My personality: Mainly South Wales within a radius of 75 miles, but as from next May 2013, I'll be travelling to the Caribbean island of St Lucia, to photograph my first international wedding. Can't wait, I'm so excited. Although I've visited many islands in the area while on holiday, to photograph a wedding there has been an ambition for many years. I can't wait for those bridal portraits with a beautifully lit Caribbean sunset.
Geographic areas I cover: I recently photographed a beautiful wedding at Fonmon Castle in the Vale of Glamorgan, it's a stunning venue with acres of beautiful grounds and a lovely secret garden.
Another of my favourite wedding venues is Miskin Manor near Llantrisant. Wonderfully high ceiling, large french windows which allow in beautiful ambient light and a great court yard which gives excellent open shade on really bright sunny days.
I've never taken a bad photograph there. It's perfect.
Venues I frequently attend: That's a really hard question. I must admit though that probably my greatest influence has been the photographers from 'Time Life'. I remember as a very young man being fascinated by Robert Capa's work portraying the Normandy landing's on D-Day, but so many of these great photographers have inspired me to improve my craft.
More recently, photographers such as Steve Mc Curry, Kevin Kabota, and Joel Grimes seem to have a great impression on me, but this perhaps more to do with their willingness to share their knowledge and creative vision than anything. I have a great deal of respect for anyone willing to give up their time to help others. Saying that, David Hobby of the Strobist web blog, shouldn't go un mentioned. The amount of effort this man has put into the world of photography over the past few years is phenomenal, and he's inspired a whole new generation of photographers to learn to light properly. All power to him.
I found inspiration from: I tend to shoot for myself and tailor my shooting style to my clients requirements.
Photographing to win a competition is a whole different ball game. But I have had some success and achieved a coveted 'Gold' award in the open category of the SWPP's November competition 2011, as well as numerous 'Silver', 'Bronze' and my work has been 'Highly Commended' on various occasions throughout 2012 in the SWPP's monthly competitions. I've also won another 'Bronze' award with the 'Guild of Photographers'.
More importantly to me as a professional photographer, I was recently awarded my Licentiate with the SWPP - So I now have letters after my name. Something Jimmy Saville couldn't fix for me as a child.
Success in photography: Trained initially by my father in the dark art of film photography, shooting and developing my own 35 mm and medium format images.
Many courses with the RPS, including portraiture, landscape, and fashion photography.
Later in my career, I trained with Mr Len Bateman whose a 'Fellow ' of both the SWPP and MPA, and more recently I've attended training courses with Ritchie Walton FSWPP in off camera flash fashion photography and processing at Margam House in West Glamorgan. In September 2012 I gained my Licentiate with the SWPP
Photographic training: I have very varied interests, from Science, Sport, mountaineering, mountain biking, karate, history (Specifically the history of WW2), Engineering (I was an aircraft engineer in the RAF).
But the biggest love of my life is my wonderful familly. I have two beautiful grandsons, Oliver and George who are the joy of my life.
My interests outside photography: I joined the RAF in 1980 - Married in 1983 - The birth of my beautiful daughter Kirsty in 1986 - Represented Wales in at international level in Karate in 1987 The birth of my very clever and wonderful son Richard in 1989 - First person in the RAF to be awarded RAF Colours for achievement in Karate 1989 - Left RAF in 2002 - Joined Mod as an engineering manger specialising in computrised aircraft asset management - Left Mod in 2010 and set up my company Randell John Photography in June 2011 - LSWPP September 2012
