Undaunted by this history we set about taking some measurements. We chose D55 as our white point and 100cd/m2 as our target luminance. Using i1 Profiler we audited the profiled result and obtained the following numbers:

The gamut volume for the iMac was measured as 1,049,138.

The Macbeth cc 24-patch set is not very demanding because its patches lie inboard of the gamut boundary and it is a low contrast target. The GRACol is more demanding with full cyans but the Fogra Class A certification is the most demanding with upwards if 1,700 patch points.

Thus you get what you pay for; the iMac screens are bright, sharp and cheerful, but accurate they are not! Despite this, a huge proportion of the graphics industry in bumping along on their iMacs, happy that they look cool on the bench.

When examining the audit target (which is set up as a ProPhoto RGB gamut), it was possible to differentiate the shadows down to 15 RGB points and highlights up to 251. Practically then the iMac is usable providing you stay clear of making pronouncements around the out-of-gamut cmyk tones.

Connecting a Projector

Projector connection is through the Mini Display port and so an adaptor is essential when going out to VGA, HDMI or DVA inputs. For a newbie, connecting a projector is slightly obscure. The Help file was useless; when asked 'connecting a projector' it came up with everything but a projector connection. Eventually we found it (it's fn>cmd>F4 for the record!). Then you need to go to Apple>System Preferences and check the 'Mirror' box. After that it was plain sailing, although we note that the screw holes in the Mini Display Port-VGA adaptor do not align with the thumb screws of our cable which is a little insecure - it is always advisable to screw the two together to prevent leaving the venue without your £25 adaptor!

It is a point worth considering that you need to invest in about £75-worth of adaptors to be sure of making a connection at a new and unknown location - that's quite a high percentage of the cost of the computer!
