The silent acknowledgement from all the experienced photographers present was imitated by this rookie. The opening ceremony had gone well. The host Salvation Army officer then took the princess around the building to meet some of the people who attended the Army there.

In one room were some elderly citizens who attended the programme especially arranged for them every week were gathered. HRH approaching one dear lady enquired as to how long she had been coming to the Army. Emphasising the number of years of her attendance the lady pointed two fingers in a less than acceptable fashion (well in most circles at any rate) and said, 'Two years your Majesty! Two years!' I have to confess that together with all my compatriots, my flash tube ignited with the rest! I have the neg. to prove it!

Working for an International movement there have been many overseas assignments over the years.

I have visited many countries in Europe, some frequently. Many visits to the United States of America. East Africa, Rwanda Indonesia, Philippines, Myanmar (formerly Burma) Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and the former Communist countries of Russia, Czech Republic, and the Ukraine.

RWANDA

Perhaps the most memorable, if not the most potentially dangerous were two trips to Africa during the civil war in Rwanda.

First, within a month of the war commencing, I was flown into Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania. From there a small Cessna Mission Aviation Fellowship plane took me to the refugee camp in Ngara to monitor the distribution of some 700 tons (21 articulated lorries machine-packed) of clothing The Salvation Army had obtained from its worldwide resources, and transporting to the camp in a period of just 45 days! A statistic any organisation would be proud of.
