Monochrome Testing
We tested both papers using the Epson ABW driver. The data are tabled. The Dmax was up on that obtained with the full-colour ink print. Using a tone setting of 'dark' has created prints that are a couple of points too dark so a value of 'Normal' would be around 2% too light on our machine. As ever, some experimentation will be required on your own set-up but the mono prints had the same sparkle as the colour versions and were really clean and punchy. The metamerism rose slightly to 2.45 using ABW. Both prints would be rated excellent by most observers.
We use Paul Gallagher's image to provide a visual reference of print quality then measure the Dmax and mid-tone value to assess the optimum tone setting for the Epson ABW driver. This data can also be measured and plotted and here the Gloss and Luster tone ranges are almost identical, the blue diamonds of the Gloss media are almost hidden by those from the Luster media.
Overall
Providing you avoid the icc profiles from the web (for the 4900 at least) these papers will turn in a good performance and certainly create prints with quite an impact. Fine art printers, nervous of OBAs will have to look elsewhere.
