Editorial - April-May 2010 - part 1 of 1

Once again the numbers at Focus were up, seemingly on all counts. As the 'Societies' we did well, with an alltime high on member recruitment. Sales on the stands were almost as buoyant, with dealers reporting record figures. What does it all mean? From the Society point of view it represents an influx of hopeful people (often with redundancy cheques in hand) who fancy their chance as photographers. Welcome to the crazy world of imaging guys and gals - we are here to help in any way that we can! Whatever else you do, promise me you won't take your new camera out to a first wedding without thoroughly preparing and most of all without insurance. It's a tricky world out there - squeezed margins, fickle camera gear, litigious clients, etc. A good business head is more important than a knowledge of fill-in flash (although both are needed!) and remember that it is going to be quite a while before somebody pays you for your photographs, you have to be able to eat I the interim period. Good luck!
