But what techniques should photographers use to get their own name out there and in front of potential clients? I couldn't pass up the chance to ask Jen since it makes up a large part of her job at Aspire! 'We always say that word of mouth is one of the best ways to get exposure for your business and we believe that photographers should do things that don't cost them too much money. It's an expensive career to start out in which means that collaboration shoots with hairdressers, makeup artists and wedding shops are a great places to start. When people see your pictures on social media you'll get them talking.' It can be daunting to many of us to ask someone you don't know for collaboration. 'Just be yourself. Suggest a possible skill swap together and just go and do a shoot!'

Planning for the future

It is easy to assume that every photographer who balances their business as well as being employed elsewhere is aching to go full time as a photographer, but Jen is an exception to the rule! 'I love my job at Aspire, it's my dream job! Everyone always laughs, but it really is. I also love doing a limited number of weddings each year as well as some portrait shoots and that's me in my element!' However, Jen is adamant that she doesn't want to be known as someone who just moonlights taking photographs alongside their main job. 'I'm very lucky that my job gives me flexibility so I don't consider myself a kind of weekend-warrior. I work hard for my clients and I do it because I love it. I also feel that I give a lot back to the industry through my work at Aspire too.'

Jen is also making exciting plans for the future despite already having a relentless schedule! 'My partner is a chef and we have a long-term project to develop a cookbook. It fits in with our lifestyle - we're going to have a vegetable patch in the garden so that we can grow and make everything ourselves. He is a really talented chef and I love photographing food so we're going to do that together.' Certainly it sounds like at just 28 years old Jen has achieved a huge amount. Who would complain about being surrounded by a great team at work, great food at home and a beautiful Labrador puppy, as well as having the freedom to follow your passion in your job and your own business.
