Low light technology

The great thing about photography today is that it's all changing so rapidly, and alongside Jerry's natural gift for seeing the light in the most unpromising of locations he's also happy to take advantage of the latest low light technology that modern DSLRs are capable of offering, and he's using this capability to venture into some fascinating new areas.

"The main reason why I switched to the Nikon system was because of its high performance in low lighting situations," he says. "When I won the Photographer of the Year award a few years ago at the Convention it made my transition to Nikon very easy, because my prize was a Nikon D3S and it was the perfect opportunity for me to start working with it.

It's been a real help to me in many situations, one of the most recent being when I found myself photographing a wedding ceremony in a church crypt where there was no flash photography allowed. Even an 85mm f/1.4 prime lens couldn't help me in this situation, but shooting at ISO 10,000 made it possible to capture those ceremony images."

It was the kind of challenging situation that Jerry relishes almost above everything else and, as usual, he came away with the goods and was able to deliver the images that his couple was looking for.

"As photographers we all face similar challenges in having to shoot in unflattering environments and mundane circumstances," he says. "The fact is we should not only be comfortable taking photographs but also in creating them. If you can produce something extraordinary from a situation that's no better than ordinary it's more fulfilling for you as an artist than taking pictures in easy circumstances."

The mantra by which Jerry works is: 'You don't have to be the best; you just have to be better than last week.' "I truly believe this," he says.
