Branching Out

At the Societies' Convention 2015 Mark will be delivering two very different Masterclasses designed to inspire and inform. For Mark, the Convention is one of the highlights of the year: 'I've seen it grow over time, from a small conference in Coventry to where it is now. It's a great place to meet other photographers with people coming in from all over the world, bringing their different skills and experiences.'

On Saturday Mark will be teaching a Masterclass based on his own style of street photography. It will cover everything you need to know to start planning a personal project and get out there with your camera. 'Staying with a project for a week, a year or even longer and creating a photo essay can be really beneficial to your other photographic work.' Many wedding clients request documentary-style images, so there's no better way to develop your eye for spotting those reportage opportunities, than to go out and shoot everyday occurrences. 'There's no doubt it helps me to brush up my skills, capturing key moments and emotions as and when they happen,' says Mark. 'And having other projects to focus on is important otherwise you can become trapped in a style and set of images and familiar responses if you only do weddings every weekend of the year.'

Mark will also be leading a Masterclass on Jewish wedding photography, a must-see for any photographer with a Jewish community in their local area. 'I'll be covering every aspect of the key traditional styles of Jewish weddings. The different strands of Judaism need different approaches to recording their wedding celebrations.' Since Jewish wedding photography is a niche part of the industry and relies heavily on recommendation, it can end up being a lucrative market once you've broken into the local community. 'Most Jewish brides I meet for the first time haven't even looked at my website, and for some weddings I never even meet the bride and groom prior to the wedding day since the organisation is completed by the parents. It is important to understand that the Jewish culture has many unique traditions and expectations of behaviour, and they will be highly offended if you do not know and understand them.' For anyone considering shooting a Jewish wedding, or even for those just interested in the cultural aspects that impact on the wedding photography, Mark's Masterclass will be a great introduction to a client base which is hard to establish yourself in.
