Strip-light

In addition to using a traditional soft-box, the idea of using a thin strip-light as the main light can also be considered and will create a high-impact look depending upon placement. When used as a profile light, this source will give a wonderful thin yet soft light from the head and shoulders down to ¾ length with no problem. Also, just for fun, try turning a strip-light into the horizontal position and place it over the camera. When you light a face in this manner you get a unique catch-light in the eyes while still resulting in an image with terrific light quality on the face.

Soft-box Octa

The large and medium-sized Soft-box Octa has become one of the most gorgeous lights there is when placed properly over the camera, adding contouring to the cheekbones of our clients. The Octa (also known as Octabank or Octabox, depending on brand) spreads light a bit more than the soft-box while still creating a large soft light quality look. Again, depending on the angle to the face in relation to the camera, you can make this look like a traditional portrait, a high-fashion look, or a flat light which works for group photography. Often I will remove the front translucent 'skin' and allow the light to bounce or reflect directly out of the large silver contoured interior of the Octa.
