A Lighttools 40˚ soft egg-crate was added to the main soft box to control the spill light striking the background. Compare Image 3 with Image 4. The background needed to read four stops darker than middle gray to appear black so that I could take full advantage of my pie plate trick. The power on the light was readjusted to maintain the already-established f8 exposure.
• To ensure detail in the shadow areas of Cheyanne, a 24x72 inch strip light soft-box with a 20/60 Soft Egg-crate fitted to it is positioned six feet in front of Cheyanne and a little to camera right, see Image 5. The 20/60 egg-crate will prevent the fill light from spilling on the backdrop. The power setting on this light was dialed in to create an incident meter reading of f2 ¹»3, this means that this fill light is filling in the shadows at a negative 3 2/3 exposure.

• In preparation for some background lighting effects, another LR12 Lightrein mono-block studio strobe is added to the set, its flash is turned off leaving only its 650watt modeling light on, see Image 6. With the camera white balance set for the strobe main light (roughly 5,000˚ Kelvin), the tungsten colour balance of the modeling light (roughly 3200˚ Kelvin) makes the backdrop appear very warm. Compare the colour of the dyed muslin between Image 3 and Image 6. The camera shutter speed is set to ½ second to collect enough light for a suitable exposure of the background.
