If I also chose my viewpoint carefully, directed my model properly and shot at my favourite f4, I could not only ensure that the curtains also acted as a simple background behind our girl rather than seeing the dark wall beyond, but I could also place some of the curtain material directly in front of my lens and make lovely diffuse areas in front of our model adding a sense of depth to the final image.

Regardless of the large amount of diffusion through the left curtain, light still travels in straight lines and to achieve the correct level of detail that we should aspire to in our picture taking, I still placed my main light up and pointed it down, so that the downward angle of the resulting light would produce more natural looking shadows on the face. I also turned her toward the light and still managed to achieve the 'short' lighting technique that is so complimentary to the shape of the face.

And all produced with just one light.
