Time Served - part 1 of 1 2 3 4 5

by Lisa Beaney Published

Lisa Beaney was the first winner of Mark Cleghorn's Apprentice along with Anna Oakden. They have recently finished serving their time with Mark and here Lisa tells her story of this and other milestones in her varied career. Lisa and Anna's successor has recently been chosen.

Hi, I'm Lisa Beaney and I'm a photographer. I haven't always been a photographer and for a long time I felt a bit of a fraud saying that I was. I started my working life as an engineer doing both the hardware and software design on flight simulators, from there I moved in to IT support and worked for a company providing hardware maintenance for companies all round the UK. When I had children I became self employed as an IT consultant and carried on doing that until 2006. I worked for a variety of companies including aviation businesses, local government, housing associations and I ran training on Microsoft systems for the City of London Universities MBA programme.

And then things changed. Quite often there is a trigger that makes you reassess your life and what you want from it and I decided that I wanted to do something I really loved doing rather than just something that paid well.

When I started in photography I thought that I would be able to sell landscape photos to local galleries and make an income from it. I soon found out that this has to be one of the hardest ways to try to make a living so looked for another way ! I have always loved photographing people so thought that photographing weddings would be a good idea - I had no experience and no idea of the industry.
