Creating a Portfolio

Like so many others who are looking to create a new business from scratch, Chris has found the support and the comradeship of The Societies to be crucial, and he signed up as a member of the SWPP three years ago and last year he became a member of the SIFGP, which specifically caters for his new area of interest. Fully involved in all aspects of the body of which he's a member, Chris has twice spoken at the Convention before, delivering a workshop entitled 'The Fast and The Furious' in 2010, which looked at ways to start up a portrait and wedding business, while he covered the topics of web design, social media and marketing in 2011. For 2013 he'll be covering another topic that is close to his heart, and it ties in very closely to the experience he's gained through his period of refocusing.

"I'm looking at the next Societies' Convention in 2013 to share my views and perspectives on creating portfolios," he says, "and my hope is that others can learn from this in a way that will benefit their own businesses. Although the main emphasis will obviously be on fashion portfolios, which is where my personal experience is drawn from, I also aim to illustrate how the things I've learned can benefit social, boudoir and wedding photographers who might be considering adding a 'fashion element' to other genres of photography.

"To my mind creating a portfolio is one of the most important things a photographer needs to think about, and it needs to be far more than a collection of pretty pictures. For me it's been a fundamental part of my strategy to move into editorial fashion, and I'll not only be talking about how I've created the images to fill my portfolio, but I'll also cover how I've incorporated this effectively into my marketing and networking."Chris is looking forward to repeating the experience of delivering a seminar and he was delighted at the response to his previous workshops. "Both were well attended," he says, "and I'm hoping that this latest one will be similarly well received, even though it all kicks off at 8am!"

One of those who has helped immensely as Chris has travelled on his road to a new speciality is Bjorn Thomassen, who is also speaking at the 2013 Convention. "I'm particularly looking forward to attending Bjorn's seminars because he's been a great influence and mentor to me over the last 18 months," says Chris. "I admire his amazing images, and the way that these emerge through his combination of creativity and technical expertise."

All in all it should be something of a watershed Convention for Chris as he continues his move into the commercial and editorial worlds, and he can hardly wait for it all to begin!
