Which piece of equipment, camera aside, would you not be without?
It's difficult to choose just one; it would have to be three. Inquisitive dogs like to put their noses up against my lens, so my lens cloth is always close by. I have a squeaker to get their attention and a very good vacuum to get rid of pet hair!
What single piece of advice you would give someone setting up in business?
I think it's really important to communicate with your clients. Mine often tell me they made an enquiry with another photographer who never returned their email or call – I feel it's simply common courtesy to always reply. When I'm out and someone expresses an interest in what I do, I hand them a business card and write their details in my notebook. As I am always so busy, I need to be disciplined in asking existing clients if I can help them further, but I'm getting better at this.
My advice would be, don’t hold back in communicating what you love doing, because you don’t feel good enough – follow your heart. I wasted seven years thinking about launching my business before I took the plunge. Value yourself, believe in yourself, stretch yourself and move out of your comfort zone.
What do you love photographing and why?
I specialise in pet and family photography. It’s not just a job or diversion for me, it’s a real labour of love. I can’t imagine doing anything else. I’ve spent a lifetime around animals, studying their qualities, mindfully watching their antics and getting them to trust me behind the camera. The interaction and bond I see between pet and owner and what they do for each other continually amazes me – I love to capture that in photographs.
I enjoy creating a stress-free, fun experience for my clients, both pets and owners, as well as furthering my skills in photography. As soon as I get an enquiry, I ask clients to send a picture of their pets with details of their age, background, colour and personality – I can’t wait to see them.
