The SSD Operating System Drive Samsung 1TB 960 Evo PCIe SSD
Solid State Drives (SSD) are now commonplace in both desktop and laptop devices. They are blisteringly quick. The 960 Evo was chosen for its speed – read 3,200 MB/s, write 1,900 MB/s. We chose 1TB capacity because of the number of applications we routinely have to install for review purposes (and then tend to leave resident!), most people would survive with 500GB. The drives retails at £450 but we got it for £342. When you see Photoshop opening in 1.1 seconds it seems money well spent.

The SSD Working Data Drive Samsung 850 EVO 1TB 2.5inch SSD
We specified an SSD for the working drive, for although we are intending to use the Synology NAS box (see later), it is sometimes beneficial to move large image files to a fast drive for things such as time-lapse building. In these tasks speed of reading becomes important. The read and write speeds are claimed at 540MB/s.

The 4TB Spinning Drives WD Red 4TB 3.5" SATA NAS Hard Drive
Two enterprise-class NAS Western Digital drives are fitted into a mirrored RAID configuration to provide local storage. They have claimed read and write speeds of around 150MB/s.

CPU Intel Core I7-7700K 4.20 GHz Socket 1151 8MB Cache
The heart of the machine. This model is easy to over-clock although we left that to the gaming geeks and run it at standard speed. It is four core. We will only get a firm idea of how it performs and links to the graphics card as we get into more complex Photoshop tasks.
