Testing Method
In all cases the Epson 4900 printer was used as the test bed. Profiles were made using i1Profiler on a 400-patch target. Auditing was carried out using the usual HiGAM test target which contains two Macbeth sets (SG and Color Checker), the Fogra V3 set, a grey ramp and a set of values from right out at the extremities of the gamut field. We also made monochrome prints using the ABW driver and measured the parameters on a grey ramp.

We had a little difficulty with paper transport for the thicker papers and eventually used the manual feeder of the Epson 4900 for all of them. High-value prints should be made and checked on a one-at-a-time basis anyway but if you have a high output requirement and less stringent concerns over the archival properties of your paper then the RC coated should be amenable to automatic loading. In any case for high output roll feed would be better (but not available on the Epson 3880).

The Papers Requiring Photo Black Ink
These break down further into the Baryta/Fibre duo and the four resin coated media. Between them they provide a full range of surfaces for photographic work. The Baryta/Fibre pair are premium products, especially Platine Fibre Rag which ticks almost every box we can think of; the RC media are brightened, punchy media, more like traditional RC wet chemistry papers.

The Baryta/Fibre Duo
Let's start with the best! These are the premium papers of the group. They hark back to Canson's days making papers for platinum printing (Platine is Platinum in French). Both are close to spectral neutrality in their base tone which gives them a slightly creamy look in most light. Baryta Photographique has a small amount of OBAs, enough to just lift the Brightness and Fluorescence readings but as you will see later not enough to influence their fabulous audit statistics! Baryta Photographique is 100% alpha cellulose, Platine Fibre Rag is 100% cotton rag, the latter being more highly regarded in art circles
