First set was a simple two-light set-up with black paper. Gridded light from the back hit the top of Jade's head and shoulders, providing a little separation from the backdrop. From the front was a 130 by 50 strip-box in vertical orientation. Raised high and angled down it gives good light and fall-off around the thighs together with good modelling around cheek bones, etc. (See right) Shooting position was from directly under the bottom edge of the strip box. We started with a few shots without the snakes and then added in Bertha, one of the intermediate-sized snakes.

She was a lively one and they are attracted to heat so loved snuggling in on Jade. I used an Elinchrom BXRi 500 head to give plenty of power on the main light. I wanted a small aperture to give plenty of depth of field for when the snake moved away from Jade. The flash gave f16 at ¾ power so was perfect for the job.
