The Simplest Form of Backup
The simplest form of back up, and the one which will satisfy many sole traders/operators is to buy a USB attached hard drive and store it alongside your computer system. For many, manually backing up is sufficiently secure although you have to ensure that you remember to include all the required files. When the drives gets full you put it in a cupboard and replace it on the desk. You are vulnerable to theft, fire and forgetting to actually do the job but it is an inexpensive solution. The drive is also vulnerable to virus attack because it is attached to your system over USB. USB 3, external SATA and (for Mac) Thunderbolt connections are very much faster than USB 2.
The Synology software is extensive and relatively easy to use. It has complex scheduling capabilities and even has the ability to thumbnail camera images from most formats including Raw files.
To provide a further level of security the Imagemaker NAS box is duplicated off-site and backups are made across a VPN tunnel. This doubles the system cost but insures against both theft and house fire.
