The Masks A hard edge mask was made with a combination of Magic Wand selections then painting onto a Quick Mask. This is saved, duplicated then inverted and reused after some edge modifications. We ran a softedged brush around the bird to disguise the change of tone produced by the adjustment layers. There are no fixed rules for this process other than your handiwork must remain invisible!

CONCLUSION

Was it worth the effort? Well it won Jon a competition first time out, so probably yes!

As a method, the approach is not the fastest but we have found, over the years, that when an image is difficult to correct globally it is often because of the 'crossed curves' effect that the lighting has created. The improvement is very apparent when the adjustment layers are switched on and off. The main stumbling block to success is frequently because there is are no true neutrals in the image upon which to target.
