Traditional Barytas
We have written at length on the baryta papers in previous issues of Paper Chase. They mostly, but not always, contain a barium sulphate coating but their main characteristic is to mimic the surface of a traditional air-dried, fibre-base silver medium.

Our findings have been almost universally consistent for these types of paper, namely good Dmax, high colour accuracy and frequently spectacular skin tone accuracy.The PermaJet range consists of five surfaces:
Fibre Base Gloss 295gsm
Fibre Base Gloss Warmtone 295gsm
Fibre Base Royal 325gsm
Fibre Base Matt (Delta) 271gsm
Photo Art Pearl 270gsm

The first three have a moderate gloss finish. The Fibre Base Matt is truly matt and uses matt black ink. The Photo Art Pearl is unlike all other papersin both the range (and the series) with a unique look and feel which can be very attractive with the right image.

The coatings are moderately brightened with Lab b values between -4 and -6 units. The Warm Tone is different as it is OBA free and has no cooling agents to give it a naturalwarm tone. The summary data confirms excellent skin tone accuracy allied with 'best in class' values for the landscape tones. The FB Delta Matt is of particularinterest to the mono enthusiasts as the CII is very low, allied to an excellent Dmax. The overall colour accuracy is also high. Photo Art Pearl also returns goodstatistics and provided you like the sheen it delivers it might just become your favourite - you would not be alone!
