Aftertreatment

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Aftertreatment refers to the processes applied to photographic negatives or prints after initial development to correct exposure or development faults, enhance image quality, or create special artistic effects. Techniques may include dodging and burning, toning, retouching, or applying chemical treatments to adjust contrast, density, or color balance. Aftertreatment is commonly used in black-and-white and color photography, fine art printing, and professional darkroom workflows, allowing photographers to refine images, correct minor imperfections, and achieve creative or stylistic results that enhance the final photograph.
