Agitation

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Agitation is a technique used during photographic processing to ensure that fresh chemical solution continually contacts the surface of light-sensitive materials, such as film or photographic paper. By gently moving or rocking the processing tank, tray, or container, agitation promotes even development, prevents uneven density, and reduces the risk of streaks or spots. Proper agitation is essential in black-and-white and color film development, print processing, and darkroom workflows, helping photographers achieve consistent, high-quality results while maintaining image detail and tonal accuracy.
