Allegory

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Allegory in photography refers to a work of art that represents one subject through the guise of another, often to convey a deeper moral, symbolic, or conceptual meaning. An allegoric photograph typically illustrates ideas, emotions, or themes beyond the literal subject, using visual metaphor, symbolism, or staged composition to communicate an "inner meaning." This approach is widely used in fine art, conceptual photography, and editorial imagery to provoke thought, tell a story, or evoke a particular response from the viewer. Mastery of allegory allows photographers to combine creativity and narrative, producing images that are both visually compelling and intellectually engaging.
