Ambient metering range

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Ambient metering range refers to the range of light levels, usually expressed in exposure values (EVs), within which a camera or light meter can accurately measure ambient light. A larger metering range allows the device to perform reliably in a wider variety of lighting conditions, from very dim to very bright scenes. The range is typically specified in relation to a standard ISO film speed or sensor sensitivity, providing photographers with a reference for correct exposure. Understanding the ambient metering range helps photographers select appropriate meters and settings, ensuring accurate exposure readings in portrait, landscape, interior, and low-light photography situations.
