ANSI (American National Standards Institute)

SWPP Photographic Glossary

A numerical rating system used to indicate the light sensitivity of photographic printing paper. This figure helps photographers and darkroom technicians determine the correct exposure and processing times to achieve consistent density, contrast, and tonal reproduction in prints. By standardizing sensitivity measurements, the ANSI system allowed for reliable results across different papers and processing conditions. Although largely replaced by modern ISO standards, ANSI ratings remain important for understanding historical photographic materials and traditional darkroom workflows.
