A ring located on the outside of a camera lens, typically behind the focusing ring, that is mechanically linked to the diaphragm. Turning the aperture ring adjusts the size of the lens opening, controlling the amount of light that passes through the lens and reaches the film or sensor. Using the aperture ring allows photographers to manually set exposure and control depth of field, influencing how much of the scene appears in focus and the overall creative effect of the image.
