APS-C sensor

SWPP Photographic Glossary

An APS-C sensor is a type of digital camera sensor that is smaller than a full-frame sensor, typically measuring around 22mm x 15mm. APS-C sensors are commonly used in consumer and enthusiast-level DSLR and mirrorless cameras, offering a balance between image quality, camera size, and affordability. Despite being smaller than full-frame sensors, APS-C cameras still produce high-quality images suitable for a wide range of photography, including portraits, landscapes, and everyday shooting.

The smaller sensor size of APS-C cameras results in a crop factor, usually around 1.5x or 1.6x, which effectively increases the focal length of lenses and can be advantageous for wildlife or sports photography. APS-C sensors generally provide good low-light performance and depth of field control, though slightly less than full-frame sensors. Their compact design makes APS-C cameras lighter and easier to carry, making them ideal for photographers who want professional-level features without the bulk or higher cost of full-frame systems.
