Automatic aperture

SWPP Photographic Glossary

A lens mechanism that keeps the aperture wide open for maximum brightness while composing and focusing, then automatically stops down to a preset smaller size just as the shutter is released. After the exposure, the aperture returns to its maximum opening, allowing the photographer to view and focus the next image easily. This system improves both focus accuracy and exposure control, and is commonly found in modern SLR and DSLR lenses.
