Automatic iris

SWPP Photographic Glossary

A lens diaphragm that is controlled automatically by a mechanism in the camera body, often linked to the shutter release. The automatic iris adjusts the aperture to the correct size for proper exposure at the moment the shutter is triggered, then usually returns to its maximum opening for focusing and composing the next shot. This system allows for accurate exposure while maintaining a bright viewfinder image for easier framing and focusing.
